A Comparative Study Of Private Gardens In Jiangnan And China 's Private Gardens In Central China

People always compare Chinese classic garden with Japanese classic garden for both of them belong to the oriental garden yet they have their various characteristics.The vast sea and culture differences did not prevent the seed of the ancient Chinese gardening technique spread to Japan, even bored different fruit from the different soil.An important part of Chinese classic garden is the private garden which took centuries gone from imitating royal garden to imitated by the royal garden is well known as the highest achievement of the Chinese classic gardening art. Previously, Japanese private garden was unavoidably influenced by Chinese private gardening art, its developing process became much easier. As the saying goes,“The master teaches the trade, but the apprentice’s skill is self-made”, Japanese private garden did produced a unique style match the environment by continuing explore and develop. From gardening angle, both southern China and central Japan were political centers and developed areas where preserving private gardens relatively in quantity and intact. Therefore, this paper choose southern China and central japan as the view and scope of Sino-Japanese private gardens.This paper studies on the differences of style, skill, history and culture of private gardens in southern China and central Japan from four aspects. Firstly, it studies on the history of Sino-Japanese private gardens in timeline, summarizes the features and characteristics from their emergence to the formative to the development and their palmy days. This is the tool to study their art of private gardens. Secondly, it studies on the superficial differences, focus on style features of Sino-Japanese private gardens. There are three main types of Private garden in central Japan, such as the pool-spring garden, tea house garden and rock garden, in addition, there also has garden combines three types in one, by contrast, private gardens in southern China has has a barren style. Thirdly, it emphasisly studies on the different gardening skills and the different combinations of rock,and plants based upon the different preferences. Fourthly, it researched the different developing ways of Sino-Jpanese private garden by analysis the culture system construction of Sino-Japanese private garden, separately analysis the impact by Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, Chinese painting art, main monographs, gardening experts. Fifthly, it researched the different of aesthetic consciousness between the southern China and central Japan private garden.Finally, this paper goes deeply into the internal connection and dissimilation between private garden in southern China and central Japan by systematic comparing and analysis though these four aspects of research.
