The research object of this thesis is the optimal design of water distribution networks. It studies the optimization methodology and the mathematic model of water distribution networks. It contains three parts: (l)conceptual discussion of optimal design of water distribution networks and evaluation criterion of optimal design model. (2)genetic algorithm and its application to optimal design of water distribution networks. (3) a new model for optimal design of water distribution networks is developed. This model can find the minimizing cost of water distribution networks. This model also can incorporate the reliability of water distribution networks in the optimal design of water distribution networks and investigate the treadoff between cost and reliability.
