The flood routing in the river, where a highest dam of China will be built, is carried out in this paper. A new mathematical model is established which has strong adaptability, good convergence, convenient applicability and various computational functions. This model can be applied to flood routing in natural rivers with more man one kilometers long, multiple tributaries and dams. The main achievements of the study are as follows:A mathematical model for simultaneous flood routing in the main river and tributaries is firstly established and the synchronous confluence is implemented in present paper. The model adopts the relation of the distance from initial point and the elevation, which not only makes the model more applicable in practical engineering but also improves the accuracy of cross-sectional hydraulic characteristics. The model is verified by use of it in a over 700 kilometer watercourse of Yangtze River, numerical results are in good agreement with measured data. Then, it successfully simulates the flood routing in more than one kilometer natural watercourse from Ertan to Zhutuo. The simultaneous outflow from dam of trunk and branch streams is studied also for wide rang floods. By the new computational procedure, the optimum scheme of outflow from dam will be determined to decrease the influence of flood. Moreover, the study improves the mathematical treatment of abrupt slope and adverse slope in watercourse and adds the automatic detection of original data.Various computational examples are presented in the paper for different cases, such as simultaneous routing of main and branch streams, routing of dam-break flood, computation of simultaneous outflow from dam, flood calculation in watercourse with multiple branch steams, and computation of the hydraulic grade line in the reservoir.
