While designing the locomotive-type diesel engine, the selection and setting of many parameters emphasize on the whole performance of the engine with rated load. Leaving the rated load, especially with low load and free running operation,Ihe efficiency of turbocharger and ratio boost pressure decrease, leading to the shortage of air in cylinders and worsening of combustion, and the economic, power and exhaust performances deteriorate. The investigation in some locomotive crew shows that the diesel locomotive runs freely and with part load in the most part of time;the expense of fuel nearly accounts for 65 to 70 percent of the whole expense of all locomotive crews. So increasing the performance of diesel locomotive with part load is critical for the improvement of its whole performance, and has giant potential in reducing the cost of locomotive crews. It is a urgent task to be solved. Now the problem of performances with part load has not aroused the enough recognition in our country. Although some measures had been applied, the outcome is far from ideal. This paper analyses deeply about the discipline of sequential turbocharging, puts forward that this technique is more ideal in improving the performances of diesel locomotive with part load. In order to simulate the application of sequential turbocharging system in diesel locomotive, the paper develops some basic simulating programs. The paper also conducted a simulating experiment, displaying that the fuel consumption rate decreases largely after turbocharged, the saving in fuel is extraordinary obvious. On the bases of all above, the paper designs and analyses some sequential turbocharging schemes for 16V240ZJ locomotive-type diesel, and figures out the main content of furtherinvestigation.
