With the rapid development of the economy and the great need of people's life, chimney is widely used in many ways as a common and important kind of structure. But the analysis of the dynamic response of the chimney in earthquake still lacks a precise method, depending on some hypothesis. This paper mainly performs a Finite Element Analysis of the dynamic response of the chimney, and the results are compared with the experimental data.Without enough records, people evaluate the earthquake from the phenomena after the earthquake, then explore the dynamic characteristics of the chimney and explain the reason of the damage. But further analysis is necessary to make sure whether the vertical or the horizontal prompting is the main reason for the damage. The structure model experiment has been done by the researchers of the Earthquake Engineering Research Division, Dalian University of Technology. The model is scientifically simulated according to the similitude rule. The results of the experiment are in good agreement with the data of theoretical calculation and the actual conditions of earthquake calamity. These data and information give a convenience for the following work. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has been completed within the environment of ANSYS. After the computation of the dynamical response of the chimney under different horizontal and vertical seismic promptings, the dynamical stress of several parts of the chimney are revealed and discussed, characteristics of the dynamical response of the chimney in earthquake are therefore accurately generalized.According to the computation, there is much difference among the calculations with different methods. So the scientific computation theory of the seismic response of structure is still pre-mature. This paper does a lot work for the improvement of the computation theory, and it will be more perfect with more attention paid in the future.
