The social contact of neighbors is one of the essential requirements of people' s daily life, particularly when the urbanizing process make the high density apartments replace the traditional houses with scenes of nature, and the interaction of social contact becomes an important way of communication and relaxation. However, the designers often put their attention on the communication place in the central part of the residential area, but neglect the social contact activities that take place in the neighborhood space. This activity has the closest relation of people' s daily life. The neglecting of the social contact activities in the design process will bring on a series of social problems, such as make the residents indifferent to each other, and the environments lack of spirits. In order to solve these existing problems, this thesis focus on the social contact space of neighborhood in the residential area , take the point of the architectural spatial view, and the study is based on the relationship between social contact activities and the environment. The study process is:First of all, the social contact space is divided into three levels, according to the territory and proximity of people, the communication ways which are different in space scale, and the attributes of the residents. These three levels, the public, the semi-public and the semi-private, each has one corresponding physical space, which are the social contact space for all the residents living in the neighborhood, for the occupants of one same apartment and for the doormates. This hierarchal division builds the fundamental framework of this thesis. Then, initiat the on-site investigation in all three levels. The residents' actual behaviors in the space and their requirements of the space, are obtained by observing the their behaviors, interviewing them and taking photos and videos of them. This investigation also identify the designers' misunderstand of the social contact space. Finally, combined with the case studies, the forms and the design recommendations of the social contact space which meet the residents' requirements well and stimulate the social contact activities are provided, as the findings of this thesis.
