Calculating the coupled temperature and stress of the brake is one of the main content in the brake design and in certain case the results have become the important theoretical foundation in constructing frictional couple materials. At first the research current situation of the brake temperature field and the algorithm of contact problems with friction is reviewed in this paper. Then the heat transfer on these surfaces is studied. A three dimensional transient thermal and stress coupled FEM model is established which regard the disk and the pad as a whole as well as confirms to the trim size of the disc and pad. The course of the braking is simulated using the nonlinear multiphysics field FEM. The effect of the variation of temperature, pressure and the boundary conditions of the contanct surfaces with frictional heating, particularly the effect of the thermal stress which is caused by the moving heat sources are taken account into in the course of numerical simulation. The FEM results indicate that the temperature distribution in the brake shows the nonaxi-symmetric effects and possesses a sharp gradient in both axial and radial directions. The great thermal stress is caused by the sharp gradient. The thermal elastic distortion is occurred simultaneous and the contact pressure change by the distortion .The change reverse affect the temperature distribution. The regulation of distribution of temperature and stress fields, the division of heat between the disc and pad are showed in this paper. The cause about the thermal stress that generates thermal cracking and thermal failure in disc brake is discussed. The results of this paper is the basic for further reseach the thermal destroy of the brake and the wear mechanisms of the frictional composite material. It helps to develop the excellent frictional material and the brake...
