According to the viewpoint of energy, a brake system is to convert mechanical energy (including kinetic energy and potential), part or all of it, into thermal energy, which is absorbed by the brake system (mainly rotor) and dissipated into atmosphere. So, in a sense, the working state of pads will affect brake efficiency directly. If pads' one side wear (OSW) appears, the output of brake torque will be uneven, brake bias, brake noise and vibration will also occur. If OSW is caused by abnormal condition, it will damage some parts of brake seriously, even affect brake efficiency and cause brake failure, finally reducing the lifespan of disk brake. So, researching the principle of OSW, trying best to decrease the possibility of OSW caused by abnormal condition, controlling the irresistible OSW of brake system, reducing the harm to the least extent, are important to disk brake's development.This paper developed from the working state of brake, analyzed the brake structure, which caused OSW; researched pad's temperature field—contact stress field (TCSF) unevenness' influence to OSW through ANSYS FE (finite element) tool, together with theory analysis. Seek rational methods to reduce OSW and apply to the second generation design of Air Disk Brake (ADB) in YF Company. Verify and deduce the principle of sliding disk brake's OSW through the design and trial— produce of the second generation ADB, rig test, performance test, hydraulic disk brake's full-scale test and statistics data of after service.According to three types of pads' OSW, considering the feasible reasons of OSW synthetically, the principle of sliding disk brake's OSW as follows:(l)For inside pad, ignoring the influence of abnormal OSW factor, the wear value of pad's entry side is larger than exit side because of the uneven distribution of TCSF.In the direction of pad, both inside and outside, the inherent factors affecting on wear speed are sliding speed and brake radius. The wear speed of pad's outside will larger, equal or smaller than inside with different value of actual brake radius.(2)Because of the caliper's influence, outside pad's OSW type is similar with inside pad but in a lighter degree in brake running—in period.
