Both gardens at Huizhou and Yangzhou are for intellectuals and of the style in the south of the Yangtze River. They share similarities in their building elements and structures, which resulted from their cultural origins and had a close relationship with Anhui Merchants' influence as well.Due to different geographic environment and philosophy of gardening, however, Huizhou Garden and Yangzhou Garden have fundamental differences. Huizhou Garden emphasizes on the beauty of regularity with artificial design; the forms and compositions of its building elements express symmetry and grandeur; its constructions are more or less axisymmetric and the whole structure is of distinguishable levels. On the other hand, Yangzhou Garden attaches importance to the beauty of Nature; the forms and compositions of its building elements represent the free style of irregularity; its constructions are asymmetric and the whole structure is smooth and of high integrity. The author has arrived at a conclusion by comparison that the essential characteristics of Huizhou Garden and Yangzhou Garden are different despite their similarities. Huizhou Garden is a product of the ideology influenced by Confucianism; its advantage is the beauty of regularity. However, Yangzhou Garden is a result which is influenced by literati's ideas of hermitage and leisure; it is famous for its natural beauty.
