The design of tall building is often controlled by its deformation .The main reason of the stucture lateral displacement is the horizontal load .With the horizontal load, the lateral displacement curve of the structure is divided to shearing type and bending type .The lateral displacement of the frame structure coursed by the bending of beam and column is belonged to shearing type, the lateral displacement coursed by the axised deformation is belonged to bending type. Story drift is one of the important parameter displayed the struture deformation. In this paper, the composition of the story drift and the limit story drift of reinforced concrete frame are discussed, the difmiton of harmful drift and harmless drift and the difference between the story drift and the story displacement diffenence are anlysised , deformation-based seismic resistant design and the requirements of displacement control for highrise building in different country design are intrduced.Through the method of finite element , a finite element model of different tall building was suggested in the paper and discussed the relationship among the lateral displacement, story drift, harmful drift and harmless drift of frame structure under horizontal load.
