This paper is from the "On-line Measuring System for Cragged Surface on Bad Conditions", supported by the Science and Technology Research Foundation of Anhui province. This project is mainly on the research of measuring geometric parameters on train wheel profile applying stereovision measurement technology.Many techniques, including photoelectric techniques, for flange profile measuring have been advanced and proved to be practical. With the development of computer image processing and photoelectric techniques, stereovision measurement techniques have been developed rapidly. It has been widely used in industrial measurement. This project focuses on the stereovision measurement techniques of measuring geometric parameters on train wheel profile.The main task of the author is the design of the optical system and the pick-up of the flange profile. The research and results have shown the feasibility and necessity of laser collimation and expanding. The author has accomplished the following tasks:1. presented the general scheme of the profile measuring system;2. presented four methods of laser collimation, realized 3 of them with the software of ZEMAX, and meted the requirement of the system design;3. realized the laser beam expanding from point-laser to line-laser wide enough to cover the flange trackside;4. after image grabbing and processing, picked up the profile of the train wheel.
