Study On The Urban Spaces For Living Based On The Methodology Of Phenomenology Architecture

This thesis emphasizes on urban life spaces and their serial distribution in the city. Making use of the method of Phenomenology for investigating into people's life styles as seen in urban life spaces and into their experiencing of the spaces, also for investigating into the relationship between human activities and urban environments, so as to unfold the value and significance of serial distribution of urban places for people's urban life activities, hoping to be of help to the understanding of the environment, and of further help to the protecting and improving of urban life environment.The thesis analyzes detailedly several examples of activity-space patterns from various exterior spaces, unfolding the significance of the activity-space patterns to environmental quality, thus furnishes a basis for forming some design guidelines for urban life spaces. Also, some further analytical works were done over examples of life spaces inside the College Campus in relation to outdoor activities which also lead to the forming of design guidelines for outdoor life spaces. So both theoretical and pragmatic works have all been touched upon.Lastly, the thesis investigates into the specific requirements of outdoor life spaces in residential areas, through five sections of residential streets or lanes in a residential area near the Chang Le Gate in East Xi-an. This investigation reveals that the experiencing of outdoor spaces directly influencing people's life styles; the living environment will influence people's life activities through spatial patterns; and places in residential areas usually consists of various activity-space patterns, and the riches their activities, the higher requirements there will be.Based on the above observing and analyzing, we can put forth some design guidelines for outdoor spaces that can help to create a fine living space. Many lively andvaried outdoor activity will be encourage to take place and this effectively promote the communication between the neighbours so that it can form an urban space with lively atmosphere.
