Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) is a system that can adjust its manufacturing process, function and capability, according to the system design. It can suit the changing market requirement rapidly and went by the name of the top of ten key technologies in the future manufacturing. It is very important to research the RMS. This dissertation was supported by The Reconfigurable Manufacturing System Technology subject of state 863 Project of China (2001AA412160). Several design problems of the RMS were studied in this dissertation. The main contents are as follows:In the first chapter, the importance, the research status quo of RMS was disserted. The significance and the main contents of the dissertation were presented.In the second chapter, the connotation of RMS was expatiated. The stream-of-variation theory and the ramp-up time theory and its application in the RMS were summarized. The scientific basics of RMS and its frame structure, the main characteristics and the realize methods of RMS were presented.In the third chapter, the reconfigurations of RMS were divided into four facets. They are the enterprise reconfiguration, the product reconfiguration, the business process reengineering, and the message platform reconfiguration. The generalized comparability theory was advanced to analyze the product reconfiguration. The message platform reconfiguration includes hardware reconfiguration and software reconfiguration. The methods of message platform reconfigured and the legacy system modularize encapsulations that based on component ware, were researched in this chapter.In the fourth chapter, the steps of reengineer RMS were divided as reconfiguration decision-making design and integrated design. The similarities between two parts and the reconfigure economies of system were analyzed, the reconfigurating methods of RMS, which based on the parts' similarities and the analysis of system resource reused rate, were provided. The expert system was used in the parts arts and crafts analysis. The method to modeling the RMS based on petri-net was expatiated. In the last of this chapter, the CAD methods of the systems integrated design e.g. reengineer the machine tools and material handling devices, were provided. And the evaluate index and way of re-engineering were researched in the last of this chapter.In the fifth chapter, The arrive ratios models of the machining section, the buffer section and the download section etc was built on the basis of the queue-network-model of the materials system. The layout modes of RMS were researched, the design approaches of unit layout mode were expatiated, and a RMSapplication instance was supplied.In the sixth chapter, the conclusions of the dissertation were summarized. Further research of RMS and its application to manufacture were prospected.
