Unbalance is one of the most common mechanical failures of rotors. This paper is concerned with the condition monitoring and rotor balancing. Further, the procedure of rotor balance in-situ is discussed,The objective of the condition monitoring is to ascertain whether a violent vibration of a machine is caused by unbalance. To this end, the time-base diagram, orbit and FFT are used to evaluate the vibration signals measured on the machine. Only under necessary condition is the balancing of a rotor carried out.The procedure of rotor balance recommended in this paper is based on influence coefficient method. The following considerations regarding to rotor balancing in-situ are especially taken into account:1 . How to balance a rotor with initial bow;2. How to evaluate the independence of balance planes;3. How to reduce the startup and shutdowns of a rotor to be balanced. Experiments on the grinding wheel and the rotor test rig are carried out, whichhave validated the procedure.
