Study On The Urban Space Of The Physics Institute Of The Chinese Academy Of Sciences, Stone Bridge And The Haidian Book Plaza At Zhongguancun

The difficult point of the urban renewal lies in how to attain the sustainable development; i.e., how to perfect the urban infrastructure and improve the urban space qualities on the basis of the preserving the excellent urban historical information. Therefore, in the process of urban renewal, how to prolong and develop the urban space of districts has become an important subject. Here is the illustration structure of the thesis:In Chapter 1, the study subject is put forward. Based on the background of the current urban development in our country and according to the urban space development situation at Zhongguancun area, Beijing; the study meaning, content, purposes of this subject are explained. In addition, the content, scope and study objects of the subject are also defined.In Chapter 2, the study objects are briefly illustrated. The development vein of the urban space at Zhongguancun area in Beijing is briefly summarized. Emphasis is put on an overall summary on the current situation of the urban space of the area. An analysis and comparison of the area with other domestic areas of scientific researches, culture and education and the foreign science parks are made. The characteristics of the urban space of Zhongguancun and its existing problems are summarized.Case analysis and study are presented in Chapter 3, 4 and 5. Three cases of the urban space are selected. Through literature examination, site-investigation and interviews of specialists, analysis and studies are made, advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of urban space are summarized and the corresponding effective urban renewal patterns are put forward: (1) the compound of the Physics Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Taking the community where the compound is located as a space unit, definite analysis and studies have been made on the mutual relationships of the compound and its neighboring urban space, and the space definition, dimensions and structural system within the compound. The renewal pattern of the compound of the Physics Institute is approved, i.e. a small-scale partial reconstruction, Regional environmental enhancement plays a positive role in promoting urban spacesustainable development; (2) Stone Bridge. According to the traffic jam at the bridge and the scattering of shopping centers, a renewal pattern of a reasonable reconstruction on an appropriate scale is put forward; (3) Haidian Book Plaza. From space to edge, from design to construction management and the regional environment, rather deep analysis and investigation have been made on the pedestrian mall, a special urban space. The small-scale and organic renewal of the place, dimension and environment of the Haidian Book Plaza located originally at the West Street of Haidian, are all approved.Chapter 6 contains conclusions that summarize the meaning, purposes and working content of the thesis.We assume that for the development direction of Zhongguancun area, it is important that the development should be based on the regional existing urban space characteristics. In the urban renewal patterns, it is necessary to do what is appropriate in the light of local circumstances in the continuous improvement of the hardware facilities of districts already built up. In such a way, space environment could be improved, and at the same time meaningful urban historical information could be preserved, so that urban history and culture could be prolonged.
