Stone Arch Bridge is an ancient bridge form, which has nearly 2000 years history in China. So far, most of which have been demolished. In the past, the historic and artistic of the existing stone arch bridge were focused on the study but rarely for its stress mechanism. From the induction and summarize of documents, this paper discussed the origin, development course, structure classification features and practical calculation method based on traditional linear elastic theory of China's ancient stone arch bridge. This paper has determined the nonlinear interaction of stone, soil and filler and the spatial synergistic effect of arch ring, arch wall and arch back filler. It is assumed that there is contact stress between arch ring, arch wall and arch back filler which is composed by contact pressure and friction shear stress while contact displacement is measured by contact splay distance and relative tangential displacement. According to the field experimental results of similar stone arch bridge, whole analysis model of the Single-span stone arch bridge has been established by setting interfacial contact unit of different material.A case study of Chongqing·Lu'an bridge, the mechanical property of stone arch bridge was carried out by nonlinear finite element analysis and stress mechanism of bridge based on the spatial synergistic effect principle was investigated. It is showed that the arch wall and arch back filler play an important role in lateral stability, dispersal transmission of concentrated load of stone arch bridge structure.Based on the mechanical property of stone arch bridge, this paper discussed the disease and its causes to the stone arch bridge, and summarized the commonly methods of structural reinforcement.
