The development of economy in China leads to city rapid growth. Thus, with city fringe area is transforming from villages and towns into urban, peasants' life patterns have been greatly changed. Such change put enormous effects on traditional villages and houses on city fringe area. Nowadays, a great number of problems in such transformation have put disadvantage to city development, and traditional villages are destroyed and becoming less characteristic because of imitating urban patterns uncritically. However, on the subject, recent research focuses on general planning and management, seldom on architectural perspective. It is important to research transformation of country settlements on city fringe area, including houses and neighbor, to improve such current situation.Most cities in middle of China are at the beginning of the accelerating process of urbanization, therefore the research on cities in middle of China is of great significance. Taking the city of Wuhu in Anhui province as an example, this thesis concerns transformation of country settlements on city fringe area. It discusses the problems in transformation and causes leading to those problems on base of first-hand investigation materials. Villages on the city fringe area differ from common villages far from cities, so planner and designer should consider the characters. The article provides means of planning and design by researching on the characters, change and direction of country settlements from three aspects: site, house and neighborhood. It also puts forward ideas and principles through analysis and practical project experience, as well as two suggestions about construction of remote villages.
