A Study On The Conservation & Redevelopment Of Traditional Neighbourhood In Suzhou In Past 20 Years

The conservation & redevelopment of traditional neighbourhood have attracted considerable interest by the academic community both in China and abroad recently. Based on this background, selecting traditional neighbourhood in Suzhou as research topic, this thesis is intended to discuss the characteristics of the conservation & redevelopment of traditional neighbourhood, and to find out the possible progressional models for the conservation & redevelopment of traditional neighbourhood, as well as the planning strategies.After summarizing of the theories and practices of the conservation & redevelopment of traditional neighbourhood both at home and abroad, the author compares the progression of the conservation & redevelopment of traditional neighbourhood in Suzhou in past 20 years. By combining the design practices and investigating the practical problems encountered in Suzhou, the basic principle and strategies for the conservation & redevelopment of traditional neighbourhood are raised.Finally, the author introduces the practical project of the planning for the conservation & redevelopment of the 20th block in Suzhou, in which he took a part. By explainning the main ideas of the planning, the author shows how those principles previously discussed are used in this case.
