This research seeks to study and develop the methodologies of the conservation of traditional neighbourhoods by drawing on the conservation Xijie in Quanzhou, Fujian. It illustrates the respective roles of the property owners, the government and the planning workshop throughout the process of a given traditional neighbourhood. Detailed conservation proposal is provided aimed to protect, recover and upgrade the existing buildings. A scenario is recommended with respect to the long-term usage after the redevelopment of the properties owned by the government. All this will result in the dynamic upgrade and sustainable development of traditional neighbourhoods while encouraging the participation into the conservation efforts in the future time, so as to ensure the consistency and inheritability of the cultures inherent to these neighbourhoods. This case will be severing as an inspiring feasible precedent for the traditional neighbourhood conservation work to come.This paper is represented by five chapters.Chapter I Introducing the genesis of the conservation of Xijie and the purpose of this research. And profiling the precedent research on traditional neighbourhood protection, which provides the theoretical reference for this research.Chapter II Studying the evolution of laws on traditional neighbourhood conservation in and outside China, analyzing the current traditional neighbourhood conservation efforts in China and discussing the methodologies of conservation and upgrade of such neighbourhoods, so as to furnish the basis and guiding principles for this research.Chapter III Introducing the history, culture, economic development and traditional architecture of Quanzhou; putting forward the implementation approaches throughout the conservation and upgrade of Xijie.Chapter IV Fully developing the implementation approaches throughout the conservation and upgrade of Xijie with the case study on the redevelopment proposal of the private residential houses No. 189 and 195 and the public residential houses.Chapter V Defining extensively the concept of Conservation; expounding on the importance of the collaborration between the government, property user and the planer; introducing the benefits to the conservation and upgrade work from the funds set up for tourism development and other specific purposes.
