Many geological and hydrological factors of the river section, where The Yellow River water intake engineering is laid out, such as the capacity of the reservoirs along the river section upstream and downstream, the rate of the flow discharge, the erosion and silt of the watercourse, the form of the riverbed and the water current, ice tuck, the convergence of the upstream branches of the river section, flood crest, sand crest size, the capacity for flood discharge of the watercourse, the effect of flood control structure around and the impacts on surrounding environment and the third person' s legitimate rights and interests, should be considered. Suitably selected position and reasonable structure mode can save project invest and reach the anticipated result. Or, the project cannot play its due efficiency and even can be discarded in the midway. This will cause the great waste. The water intake of Ningxia Guhai pumping engineering and the water intake of Yuejin channel on Yellow River have been moved forward several times because of the silt .The optimal layout scheme and design scale of the plant site are determined through the analysis and evaluation of the capacity of flood control and flood discharge of the watercourse nearby the pump house of Zhongning electric power plant. This will provide use for reference for the similar water-intake engineering in the future. It has great significance for theoretical research and practicable value for application as well.The analysis starts with the criterion of flood control and the capacity of flood discharge of the watercourse, where the water-intake pump house lies. Through an analysis of a large amount of historical hydrological materials,a mathematic model is set up and the calculation is done. The results of the calculation have been validated by the test of the physical model of the erosion and silt of the riverbed and reach the design requirement of the project. The rational suggestions have been put forward for the safety of construction and flood control of this water intake engineering. The results of this paper will provide important base for this water-intake engineering.
