With the emerging of people's environment consciousness since the second half of the 20th century, ecology, which was only within the focuses of ecologists and biologists, has attracted increasingly great attentions of people from other field, and it has become a new viewpoint and intersection to many subjects' development. Under this kind of history background, this paper discusses the concept, characteristics and principles advocated in ecological thought. From that perspective, the author of this paper studies the course of development, the detailed content of view of architecture following ecological thought and the principles and manners of modern architectural design. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the development and content following ecological thought, and its guiding role in actual building design work on the methodology. This research is significant to develop ecological habitation, to reach harmoniousness between mankind and nature, to make unisonous progress among society, economy and nature and to realize the sustainable development strategy at last.Ecological thought means that social members use the modern ecology principles and theories to observe the world, to understand the matters around us, and to examine our actions with it. It comes into being during the course of ecology's continuously taking nourishment to enrich itself from other subjects. From epistemological viewpoint, ecological thought illustrates that the objects we cognize are combined by many factors. These factors depend upon and restrict with each other and form syntheses. The function of such syntheses surpasses the summation of these factors. Form methodological viewpoint, the basic method adopted by ecological thought is a method of sophisticate theory. This method emphasizes the integrity and dynamics of objects, the relation, the effect and the restriction among objects, and the continuous formation ecosystem, evolvement and conversion. Form the value viewpoint, ecological thought regards nature as a fellow of mankind, and takes the cooperation of mankind and nature as a value guideline to deal with their relations from now on. Ecological thought contains several basic characteristics such as integrity, equality, coordination and symbiosis, etc., and integrity is the most important characteristics. Ecological thought advocate the following important principles: the ecological principles of the relation between mankind and nature, the ecological principles of development notion, the ecological principles of economic behavior and the ecological principles of life style and so on. These principles are guideline to our activities. The modern architecture is the outcome of industrial social. It has the obvious trace of mechanically rational mode of thought, which is shown primarily in the following aspects such as function doctrine, form decision doctrine and the mechanical esthetics etc. In conclusion, the modern architecture theory is rationalistic in terms of the content, emphasizing that construction should be scientific and economic. It is deterministic on the design method, emphasizing that the form can be determined automatically and unitarily by function. Its esthetics view is technical, emphasizing ration and logic. It is the highest doctrine to technique as far as the technology is concerned, calling for using technology to solve such problems as the aesthetic problem, and its value view is utilitarian, emphasizing the architectural function. Because of the influence of thinking model of this kind, on the one hand, the modern construction provides us with much habitable room. On the other hand, it also leads to many problems such as the breakage of the resources, the deterioration of the city natural environment and the absence of human feelings etc. The emergence of these problems has their practical source and epistemic source. The practical source is the adoption of a large-scale machine operation during the course of construction and use of the modern reside environm...
