Research On The Architectural Practice And Thought Of OPEN Architecture

OPEN Architecture was founded in 2003 by Li Hu and Huang Wenjing in New York.The pair set up their Beijing studio in 2008 and began independent practice in China in 2010.In the past ten years,OPEN Architecture has carried out a lot of practice,and its architecture expresses diverse design concepts and rich design methods,while also expressing a strong humanist spirit and social responsibility,which have had a positive impact on both the architectural community and society.This paper aims to make a timely summary of its architectural design concepts,methods and thoughts,and provide important references for the design practice,theoretical construction and value guidance of today’s architectural field.First,Chapter 2 provides an overview of the practice of OPEN Architecture through literature combing.On the one hand,it sorts out the growth experience of architects,and on the other hand,it focuses on summarizing its concept into three aspects: spatial openness,spatial publicity and spatial experience,and uses architectural examples to demonstrate it later.Secondly,chapters 3,4 and 5 discuss and summarize the specific design methods in detail under the three concepts of spatial openness,spatial publicity and spatial experiential through architectural case analysis,which is the main content of this paper.In the spatial openness,its design methods are summarized into type system design,standardized design,flexible space design,and green and sustainable design.In the spatial publicity,its design methods are summarized into open external space design,affinity architectural form design,diversified functional space design,integrated space organization design,and applicable activity space design.In the spatial experience,its design methods are summarized into natural material place design,natural spiritual place design,oriental strolling space design,and diversified sensory space design.At the end of each chapter,a brief review of its design methodology is provided.lastly,Chapter 6 uses the aforementioned case analysis and self-expression of OPEN Architecture to reason about its architectural thought from both objective and subjective perspectives.It points out its humanist thought of people-oriented,and discusses the four aspects of humanistic care that it includes to serve the public group,respond to people’s individual needs,recover human body cognition,and build a harmonious relationship between man and nature.At the same time,it pointed out the value orientation of responding to social problems contained in humanist thought,which shows its strong sense of social responsibility.Finally,this article summarizes its practice as: the architectural practice of pluralistic concepts guided by humanist ideas under the value orientation of responding to social problems.
