There were many studies on the static properties of common types of reticulated shells, such as sphere, cylinder, elliptic paraboloid, hyperbolic paraboloid and so on, while little systematical research on ellipsoid reticulated shells has been reported by now. After the development and actuality of single-layer dome structures were reviewed, the static stability of single-layer ellipsoid reticulated shells was thoroughly analyzed with nonlinear finite element method.Firstly, by analyzing the large-scale geometric parameters, the stability of K8 and ribbed ellipsoid reticulated shells was studied. It included the relation between the limit load and the short span, rise-to-span, sizes of member sections, and so on.Secondly, for the practical application, the influence on the static stability acted by initial geometrical imperfections, unsymmetrical distribution of loads and supporting condition was discussed. And then, the scientific regression analysis of the large data was done. For the convenience of designs, the fitting formulae for the limit loads of the K8 and ribbed ellipsoid reticulated shells were provided and may be referenced to project designs. Subsequently the study was applied to an actual project. Finally, some conclusions were obtained and some topics that should be further studied were brought forward.
