Studies On Conservation And Redevelopment By The Historical District Of Town God's Temple In Xi'an

With Xi'an city's ancient history and its various cultural relics and historic sites, this city has become the world-famous historical and cultural city, establishing its important position within the historical and cultural cities in China. However, with the quickening steps of the urban construction speed in the recent years, the protection of the ancient city has been impacted at a certain scale. It is an important and urgent subject we face at present about how to deal with the relationship between protecting the old city and the renovation, making it adapt to the development of the city based on keeping the tradition of the old characteristics of the old city.With the buildings at the Town God's Temple more than 600 years ago and the large areas of dwellings, the Town God's Temple historical district is a relatively intact one being conserved within the city wall of Ming Dynasty. This historical district has a higher research value. Following the completion of Western Street's reconstruction, the protection and renovation of this district is gradually being very important. It is not only the demands for protecting this historical district but also the requirement for protecting the famous historical and cultural city of Xi'an to revitalize the Town God's temple district. Effective methods based on the maximum protection of the historical information must be taken.Following the methods of doing investigation, using analyses, giving solutions and taking the professional theory and design methods for the existing problems, the author has gathered problems existing of the district of Town God's Temple in Xi'an, proposed some suggestions for its protection and renovation and explored some new directions beneficially for the old urban area.This thesis could be divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, the development process and experiments have been analyzed from both the domestic and the international view. The experiences of district protection in the world have been summarized, aiming at grasping the positive direction for protecting and renovatingthe historical district. In the second chapter, the development and evolution process of the urban space form in Xi'an have been analyzed, the embodiments in different aspects of urban characteristics of Xi'an have been summarized, and the realistic background for protection of the historical block has been defined. Further analyses to the protection and its examples have been finalized based on the previously mentioned steps. The experience of the former investigators' successes and failure has been summarized, form which more lessons could be drawn and learnt. In the third chapter, the influence of economy and culture of the Town God's Temple has been analyzed from different aspects, seeking a proper function and development direction for this historic district. And then through the analysis of the current situation of this district, the reason of its declination and the corresponding renovation tactics could be made. In the fourth chapter, many kinds of methods for protection and renovation have been proposed according to the protection principle of the historical district and different situations, attempting to protect the historical information at the maximum scale, offering a condition for developing this district at the same time.In the last chapter, according to the research of protecting the historical district of Town God's Temple in Xi'an, some suggestions on the old city's protection and renovation have been proposed, in order to promote a sound development of this ancient city.
