Abstract Automobile industry is the backbone of state estate, and the automobile panel die is thekey technological equipment for the manufacture of automobile bodywork. Hence the trade ofautomobile panel dies is key to automobile revisions. The automobile panel die is characteredby high precision, complex shape, large size and high requirements of fit. It's an importantissue confronted by Chinese auto industry how to quickly response to design of automobilepanel dies. A systematic summary of the problems confronted by the design and manufacture ofautomobile panel dies, and present status and trends of the research on CAD and KBE arediscussed. To improve the efficiency and quality of the design, the paper applies KnowledgeEngineering (KBE) to the design of automobile panel dies by adopting object-oriented,network and modular technology. The intelligent design wizard system for automobile paneldies, as a solution to the rapid design for automobile panel dies, is put forward. The researchabout the supporting technology, the framework, the constitution, the intelligent principle andthe workflow of the system is done. The knowledge and the flow of design are concluded according to the relevantexperience of design of the single action drawing dies of automobile panel, and then theacquirement of the knowledge is completed. The virtual intelligent model is constructedaccording to the knowledge acquired. The intelligent design wizard system for automobilepanel dies is developed on basis of the upper work. This system is an expert system especiallyfor the automobile panel dies, which can guide and assist design engineers to perform thedesign of automobile panels dies. At the same time the automatic generation of some structureof dies is realized. As a result the system shortens the design cycle and enables the rapidresponse design of automobile panels dies.
