With the increase of population, the acceleration of urbanization, the promotion of standard of living and the development of national economy, the requirement of the residence of quality and quantity has been enhancing. But the residences whose structural systems are traditional could not fulfill the requirements of the market and the costumers and the theme of "Sustainable Development". Lightweight steel residence is becoming more and more popular with the people because of its excellent performance, but lightweight steel structure being used for residence is still in origination phase in our country, and our technique of lightweight steel structure used for residence is not to be compared with that of Europe, America and Japan, especially in low-rise residence. Chinese structural system is not integrated; it goes without saying architectural system.Structural systems used for low-rise lightweight steel residence include frame system, lightweight steel joist system and multi-ribbed posts system and so on. There is great distinction in the quantity of steel among various structural systems, and the steel quantity of lightweight joist system is least. But, the sectional thickness of primary component is limited in technical code of cold-formed thin-wall steel structure. So there are few studies on the design theory of that system, especially on its capability of resisting lateral deformation. In accordance with the things, this thesis includes the folio wings:1. Study of the selection of structural systems used for low-rise residence. Structural systems which are in come use are analyzed by designing a frame system building whose function is the same as the lightweight steel villa that has been built in Dalian. The steel structure design software "STS" is used to design the building.2. The compare of the difference of the arithmetic of sectional effective width-to-thic- kness ratio between North American Codes and Chinese Codes.3. Based on the connection character of lightweight steel joist system, the simplification of structural analysis is studied and some simplified recommendations are also put forward.4. The resisting lateral deformation capability of joist structure system is studied. By the use of software ANSYS, this paper not only analyzes the resisting lateral deformation capability of oriented strand board (O.S.B) under different conditions that include the thickness and setting of O.S.B, the section thickness of studs and the space of connection, but also educes the factors that have strong effect on the capability.
