The study of the development of urban areas is essential for the master planning of urban development. The results of this study are fundamental for deciding the direction of urban development.It has been a long time that the direction of the urban area development of Xianyang varies, caused by the lack of the study of the development strategies. This has resulted in unhealthy development of the city. In this thesis the author tries to provide a systematic study on the urban area development of Xianyang. This study is objective and from macroscopic and long term standpoint of view. The result of the study can be adoptedby the decision-making department of urban area development. The contents of this thesis include:1. The review of the theories and experiences of the domestic and international urban development. The development process of the city of Xianyang is also summarized and evaluated.2.The opportunities and challenges of urban development are analyzed, from different aspects such as the global distributions of productions, the trend of the urban development, the work force distributions in China, the trend of the development of Chinese cities, central Shaanxi cities and Xi'an metropolitan areas etc. Much attention has been paid to the advantages and disadvantages of Xianyang, as a part of great Xi' an metropolis and the relations between them.3. Conclusions have been drawn for the positioning of Xianyang development, the characteristics and the structures of the city, the road and the traffic frames, the environmental system, the direction of landutilization, and the structure of industrial productions etc.4.Proposals have been made for building new relations between Xianyang and Xi'an, based on the current problems and the incorrect handling of the relations between them.Zhao Binzheng (Human Geography)Advised by Prof. Yin Huaiting.
