The sustainable concept has gradually been accepted all over the world with respect to almost all aspects of human development. From the viewpoint of sustainable development, this dissertation is intended as a general exploration of community design. The concept of "sustainable community" is proposed as the objective of community development. According to the current community construction in China, the author discusses the methods of sustainable development with the purpose on analyzing and summarizing principals and guidelines of sustainable community design. This is achieved by using the theories and approaches of "human settlements", combined with other related disciplines including sociology and ecology. This study is focused on the social value of community and the design system in order to approach the essence of community and sustainable development.This thesis begins by analyzing the basic concepts and theories related to sustainable community and reviewing the history from residential district design to community design. Sustainable community is discussed as a complicate concept intervolved with society, economy and nature. A series of sustainable community design principles and guidelines is proposed on the basis of the sociology and ecology essence of sustainable community from architecture and urban planning perspective. The author proposes four components of social design: limitation of scope, mixed use, creating the identity, public open space design, and two components of ecological design: resource systems and environmental systems. The sustainable development of community's social essence is the emphasis of dissertation. The objective of design is to enhance community attachment. At the end through the analyses of sustainable development theories and successful experiences of foreign practices, the author proposes that public participation be the focus of community design system.
