On The Market-Towns And Local-Dwelling Houses In Chendu Plain

Chengdu plain possesses a long history and culture. As a carrier of history and culture, the development of local architecture can be traced back to ancient times. Ancient architecture in Sichuan is an indispensable component of the culture of Chinese national architecture, while local architecture in Chengdu plain is a branch in the system of Sichuan ancient architecture. As an important form of the local architecture in Chengdu plain, Market-towns and local-style dwelling houses have a high value in the study of history, culture and architecture. Although a few market-towns and local dwelling entities, which are complete in form, have been preserved for study, a large amount of them are in the crises of disappearing with increasing economic construction and urbanization. Therefore, the study of the pattern of market-towns and local-style dwelling houses in Chengdu plain, as a significant part of the system of local architecture in south-west China, is not only with high academic value but also can promote the preservation and constant development of market-towns and local-style dwelling houses.The pattern of the local architecture in Chengdu plain is one of the elements that form the whole system of the society, culture, life and space structure. The elements that consists the local architecture in Chengdu plain are multiple. It is affected by geology, economy, society, culture and the ideology of family, etc. It has a profound connotation and various forms.The present thesis is based on vast amount of literature study and on-the - spot investigation. It analyzed and researched from the point of environment, ecology, history, culture, space, decoration, structure and category, etc. It employs the concrete cases as its studying subject and extensive architecture as its methodology based on which a complete pattern and constitution of market-towns and local-style dwelling houses in Chengdu plain has been put forward. The thesis aims to complete the study system of local architecture in Sichuan, provides a sources and decision-making evidence for the preservation and utilize of the traditional market-towns andlocal-style dwelling houses--the precious heritage of architectureand beautiful scenery of culture.
