City is an area of physical and immaterial civilization, and it is a comfortable place for human life. Urban morphology changes with the development of human community. Presently the development of city is in a special periods with a high accelerated speed in China. The study on the urban morphology and development will help us to make a better city planning and promote the city towards a sustainable morphology and structure.Based on understanding of the definition of urban morphology and the analysis of the tendency of urban development in the world, a systematic discussion of urban morphology and development for Hohhot is given. The limiting factors for Hohhot evolution are discussed. The historical development of urban morphology for Hohhot can be divided into two phases: feudalistic morphology and industrialized morphology. In the later phase, the development of Hohhot city consist of several periods of urban zone enlarging, slow development, steady development with space and population, and modern city development.In the past 2400 years evolution history, the urban morphology and development is different with that in other areas in China, but with a quite similar trends and the same phases. The historical characteristics of Hohhot development show that the condition of physical geography being the basis of city development, culture being the unique feature of a city, economical activities being the controlling factor, city planning being the guidance of city evolution, science and technology being the active productivity, and important historical events exerting great influence on city development.Hohhot city was built by the requirement of governor. In the first phase ofHohhot evolution, the city was expanded with the governmental demand and recessionary with the convalescence of the government. With the development of commerce, especially in Ming and Qing dynasty, commerce came to be the more important factor to control city development. In the second phase of city evolution by industrialization, Hohhot city develops greatly with the development in surrounding areas. The structure of the city shows a trend of decentralization. The development of economy and the progress of science and technology become the controlling factors for urban morphology and development.The main trend of Hohhot development is multi phase,multi-center and ecology.
