The study on the urban morphology and development will help us to make a better city planning and promote the city towards a sustainable morphology and structure.Based on understanding of the definition of urban morphology and the analysis of the tendency of urban development in the world, a systematic discussion of urban morphology and development for Hohhot is given. The limiting factors for Hohhot evolution are discussed. In the first phase ofHohhot evolution, the city was expanded with the governmental demand and recessionary with the convalescence of the government. With the development of commerce, especially in Ming and Qing dynasty, commerce came to be the more important factor to control city development. In the second phase of city evolution by industrialization, Hohhot city develops greatly with the development in surrounding areas. The structure of the city shows a trend of decentralization. The development of economy and the progress of science and technology become the controlling factors for urban morphology and development.The main trend of Hohhot development is multi phase,multi-center and ecology.
