Nowadays, with rapid development of modern cities, many conflicts unavoidably occur between city modernization and historic and cultural landscape conservation. However, with the development of city tourism and the enhancement of conserving awareness, protective measures are applied upon the development of city historic and cultural landscapes. Thus, how to balance the landscape and its surroundings turns to be the key point of people's discussion, as well as one of the most important research subjects of landscape designers and scholars.In Oct. 2003, I took part in the conceptional plan of Suzhou Tiger Hill Landscape Construction, including project designing, project drawing, and project demonstrating. According to the experience gained from the project, and my study on this subject as well, I get five disposal principles of relationship between city cultural landscape and its surroundings.1 . It is essential to keep the integrity and the feature of the historic and cultural landscape.2. Surroundings is to be fully considered in order to achieve the city integrity, and cultivate the landscape feature.3 . The human culture of the landscape is to be emphasized in order to create regional atmosphere of certain folk custom.4. Landscape natural environment should be protected. Sustainable development is to be the principle of the city landscape design.5. Consumption model is to be designed to protect the landscape and balance conservation and development.
