In the process of rapid urbanization, the urban planning method of "freezing" historical protection and renewal development is confronted with great challenges, which results in the separation of heritage sites from their historical environment and the continuous decline of non-protected historical environment. In order to overcome the problem of "punctiform" protection,China began to attach importance to the conservation of historical culture at a more macroscopic scale, and sought for new methods of total factor management and control of all-regional historic conservation beyond the spatial carrier of traditional historical and cultural elements. However, there is still a lack of concrete and feasible technical methods for the request of historical protection. On this background,"Historic Urban Landscape" has become a holistic approach to balance conservation and development in the field of heritage protection to recognize cities from the perspective of landscape. In addition, the UK has carried out practice of historic landscape characterisation at national, regional and urban scale. It includes national and local heritage sites, heritage sites and historical backgrounds, and even "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" and so on into the scope of protection, from the "heritage" of material entities to the "historicity" of all material environments. The practical methods and ideas of the historic landscape characterisation in England can provide useful technical methods for the work of all-regional historic conservation in China. This paper is based on the theoretical and method research of "Historic Urban Landscape",and learn form the methods and experiences of “ historic landscape characterisation” tools in England. In order to provide some new ideas and methods for the historical conservation in the context of national spatial planning, the practice of historic landscape characterisation was carried out in Nanning. The main research contents include:The first part is a review of heritage conservation theory.Through the analysis of the evolution of the concept of heritage, this paper summarizes the change of the paradigm of heritage and historical preservation in the world, and discusses the characteristics and difficulties of the method of the current historical preservation system in China. And then introduces the concept of "Historic Urban Landscape",discusses how it is conceived and produced as a combination of "cultural landscape" and "landscape approach",as well as the research on the characteristics of historic urban landscape approach, the core content and technical support of the work. From the perspective of theory, this paper reveals the changing trend from the traditional method of "conservation area" to the approach of "historic urban landscape".in historical conservation field. The second part introduces the historic landscape characterisation method. As a mature historical landscape method, the historic landscape characterisation method in England has established a complete set of platforms for the identification, assessment, protection and management of historic landscape. It is an effective tool for the implementation of historic urban landscape method, and has positive significance for the development of all-regional historic conservation in China. Then this chapter studies the background, characteristics and working steps of the assessment methods of historic landscape characterisation, and through case presentations and comparative studies at different scales,to summarize its the workflow and characteristics.Based on the results and the analysis of the current predicament of the urban and rural historical protection in Nanning, the application prospect of Nanning historical landscape baseline map in the regional historical protection under the territorial space planning is put forward according to the requirements of Nanning historical protection. The third part is the practice of historic landscape characterisation and the establishment of the historic landscape baseline map of Nanning.Taking the historic landscape characterisation method of England as a reference, this chapter takes Nanning city as an example to carry out the exploration work of "city-scale" historic landscape characterisation practice.Aiming at the spatial scope of Nanning about 22,000 square kilometers, the historical landscape information database is built based on GIS platform.Based on the three dimensions of natural history, rural history and town history, this chapter establishes the historic landscape baseline map of Nanning, which is an effective research result supporting its historical protection. Finally, based on the current predicament of Nanning urban and rural historical protection and the work requirements of the regional historical protection, the application prospect of Nanning historical landscape baseline map in the regional historical protection under the national spatial planning is proposed. This paper is the first time to carry out the historic landscape characterisation at the municipal scale in China and establish the historical landscape baseline map of Nanning. In the process, the objects of historical preservation are expanded from "human history" to "natural history",from "cultural relics protection units" and "protected areas" to the "history" of the entire physical environment, and the rural history and urban history are unified. Therefore,it provides a technical method of planning integration for the exploration of historical preservation in the whole area and total element.
