The Command Automation System is the control center of the warfare. One of the most urgent problems in the construction of the Command Automation System is how to explore vast raw information scientifically and efficiently. The military plotting platform based on geographic information is the presentation layer of the Command Automation System. It provides holistic and exact battlefield situational displays for the commander.The rapid development of the technology of geographic information and the computer science not only brings new technological methods to the construction of the Command Automation System, but also makes it face new challenges. In order to eliminate the contradiction between the decision-making information gained hardly and the mass of raw information achieved by the commander in the modern warfare the author analyzes the relationship between the military affairs and the geographic information system according to the requirements of the construction of the Command Automation System in the new century. By means of geographic information and military plotting, the author designs and implements the military plotting platform based on geographic information with a background of warfare map. This platform provides services for the other systems in the Command Automation System as well as provides decision support for the commander to give instructions.The technology of geographic information and military plotting are the key components in the military plotting platform. In the environment of the VC++, based on MapObjects and ArcSDE the system realizes the functionality of the management of digital map and information query. Based on the theory of parameterized curve, the author presents the design of military symbol to serve as the basis of battlefield situational plotting. And further, based on the technology of XML and NetMeeting COM the system realizes the functionality of remote real-time synergetic military plotting.At the end of this paper, the author gives a prospective view to the development of Computer Supported Cooperative Work, and the data fusion.
