| Tall buildings are "two-sides" weapons in the course of city construction these days. On the one side, they do have solved some urban problems and at a certain extent symbolize the accomplishment of the "modernization". But on the other side, they have brought other negative influences on the urban form and urban habitat. Besides some objective reasons, a lot of artificial matters may also result in these disadvantages. Thereinto, being impercipient of the evolution trace and trend of tall buildings; the existent of the subjectivity and unilateralism in the decision-making process; being lack of the right principle and means in urban planning and urban design are the 3 main problems.To solve these problems, this thesis firstly sets up a comprehensive and systemic conception on the study of tall buildings. Then consummates the working process of "decision-making — urban planning — urban design" by recognizing the factors which influence the construction of tall buildings and establishing the decision-making matrix. Thirdly, the relationship between tall buildings and urban habitat has been explored in the view of urban design. Lastly, in the study of "The Optimization of Spatial Form for Nanjing Old Area", the feasibility of such theories and methods has been testified.
