Tall buildings have become a symbol of urban prosperity and sent Shockwaves to the modern society. People now are even looking forward to an age of skyscrapers. However, with the increasing paces of urbanization today, the extreme pressure on urban land has brought a surging number of tall buildings and it is inevitably bringing negative effects to urban space. From traditional point of view, architectural design displays the value of developers and architects and tends to use the internal principle of architecture to solve the problem. But this method has entrapped tall buildings and imposed mess in urban space. Therefore, in order to achieve the highest goal of utilizing urban environment and bridge the gap between buildings and urban space, there is a urgent need for setting up architectural design principles from urban design point of view.Selecting urban waterfront as the study area, through a great number of surveys and on-site investigations and based on the relevant theories of architectural and urban design, this paper explores the present conditions and future developments of tall buildings and urban waterfronts. Starting up from many different angles, it also discusses the interactions between tall buildings and urban waterfronts, depicts a necessity for multi-factor analysis and, in the end, and proposes some suggestions in relation to practicality.The paper has three parts:The first part: introducing the problem. It demonstrates many difficulties faced by urban waterfronts of our country and points out the main cause of messy urban waterfront are the disorientation of tall buildings.The second part: analyzing the problem. From many different angles, it implements the multi-factor analysis, stresses the unique character of urban waterfront environment. Meanwhile, the paper analyzes its interactions with the layout of tall buildings and uses the results as arguments.The third part: solving the problem. This is the focal point of the paper. In combination with a real case, it discusses some important macro and micro aspects of tall building design and lays out the principles of constructing tall buildings in urban waterfronts under different circumstances.
