In the history of more than one hundred years the vehicles equipped with internal combustion engine have made great contribution to the development of human society, but arouse serious problems such as environmental pollution and shortage of energy resources. The most effective way to solve the problems is to devote major efforts to developing Electric Vehicle (EV).Electric propulsion system is the key technology of EV development whether for hybrid electric vehicle, fuel cell electric vehicle or battery electric vehicle. Among various electric propulsion systems, electric motor wheel configuration has many advantages from the view point of saving installation space and increasing energy efficiency.Since the EV development started late in our country, it is awfully necessary to learn and use foreign advanced technologies. Although lots of achievement on EV development of our country has been gained in recent years, the study on propulsion system of electric motor wheel has been numbered.In this thesis, EV developing history and recent status in home and abroad are described. After patents and other literatures about electric motor wheels have been comprehensively reviewed, electric wheel motor classification and performance comparison are given. Design targets and performance specifications are summarized. Based on the design of conventional vehicle, electric motor wheel design method has been explored with the design procedures proposed.Secondly, structure design comparison of electric motor wheel in such aspects as lubricating, cooling and braking systems are made in detail and certain problems that need paying attention are suggested. At last, the tractive performances of EV with electric motor wheel are simulated by means of software Advisor after electric motor wheel model and other vehicle models established. Furthermore, by means of software Autoanal the ride performance of the vehicles with front wheel driving, rear wheel driving and total wheel driving are respectively simulated after wheel model of four degree of freedom established. Then some useful conclusions are resulted.
