The issue of housing has been the focused point in the field of city-planning and architecture for a long time. Residential area is not only a physical form for living, but also a reflection of regional culture.In China, JiangNan is a region featuring profound history, culture and vernacular buildings. Nowadays, however, these distinctive cultures are scarcely reflected on contemporary vernacular residential area. These residential areas are always stick to imitating the surface trait of vernacular houses and ignore the culture and psychological requirement of residents.Basing on this status, the problems in previous studies are present and then the paper suggested that when we study on vernacular residence, we could not only concentrate on physical form of houses, but also on how to inherit the inner sprit of vernacular housing .The paper give a new methodology which based on sociology, esthetics, psychology and then give a comprehensive analysis which included the culture meaning of traditional residence and the psychological, culture and esthetic requirement of residents.The author focused on the research about residents and create a new evaluation system . in this paper, a general investigation on residential landscape is made in more than thirty residential areas, meanwhile, subjective evaluation on residential landscape is surveyed and analyzed basing on eight residential areas in JiangNan region. Then main result is that the requirements of residents on residential landscape are multi-layered. At last, this article analyzed one site planning in shanghai and put forward a tentative program on how to create vernacular residential landscape in a new residential area in the present age.
