With the social and economic development, cities in China have gained a rapid progress. But great damage is also done to the historical context in the process of renewal and reconstruction. New buildings are unhistorical and lack of a legible figure environment for people to experience simply. Through the phenomenon of "architectural lacuna", this thesis aims to study on some basic issues of new architectural design in a historical context. The thesis consists of three main parts. In the first part, the concept of "architectural lacuna" is introduced. Secondly, from aspects of edge, region and landmark, case study of how to refill an architectural lacuna is analyzed. Based on the investigation, the means and principles of how new buildings should be built in a historical context are summarized from aspects of both building layout and form.In the epilogue, a process of "evolution" is recommended for new architectural design in a historical context against the ignorance of historical cultural tradition in both mind and performance nowadays.
