The fundamental policy of "invigorating China through science and education" has greatly promoted the development of education in this country. As a result, many colleges and universities are now facing the task of campus construction, expansion, readjustment, merge, reconstruction and removal, etc. However, before real construction could get under way, campus planning should be carried out first, which rightly justifies the existence of the study in this paper. Based on the author's personal involvement in a couple of campus planning projects and vast research on a large number of college campuses, this paper presents a summary of campus planning practice and consideration of the new century campus planning. The research approaches adopted in this paper are primarily qualitative induction, comparison and analysis, and quantitative study with tangible examples. There are five chapters in this paper:Chapter I, the introductory chapter, introduces the origin, background and significance of this study as well as the methodology adopted in this paper, reviewing the development of China's campus planning. As the major part of the paper, Chapter II summarizes the characteristics of, inner laws and problems in China's new century campus planning on the basis of comparison, induction, qualitative and quantitative analysis of eight campus planning projects the author has personally involved in.Based on the analysis in Chapter II, Chapter III concludes some key points in conducting campus planning, especially in aspects like planning form, integral style of the campus, function organization, transportation system, features of old campus' reconstruction, enlargement and rebirth, single building design and campus landscape design, etc. Chapter IV is a brief summary of trends in the new century campus planning. Serving as a conclusion and rethinking of the whole thesis, Chapter V turns back to make evaluation on the practical projects and draw a conclusion after some induction, comparison and overall analysis.
