The old-fashioned lanes and alleys are the important components of the regional culture of Wuhan. So we should carry on the omni-directional research in many angles combining with multi-disciplines of science, such as architecture, human geography, sociology, cultural anthropology, and so on. The origin, forming and developing of the old-fashioned lanes and alleys of Wuhan all happen in the certain regional space. And the structures, forms of its environmental modality have all reflected the regional characteristic. In the past, it stayed the study on lanes and alleys of Wuhan only in how to repair, how to reconstruct, how to match modern life, and etc. It had paid much more close attention to the level designing, structure strengthening and function consummating of modernization. And the directions of the study were mostly towards elaborating the traditional elements through the experience of modern inhabiting and background of theories. But it turned a blind eye to the advantage of the environmental form of the lanes and alleys, even ignored. However, in recent years more and more developers and designers begin to realize: The native culture and ecological landscape design are both significant. To reflect the artistic spirit of the native culture, the key lies in how to reproduce the marrow of native culture and ecology. In Wuhan, the unique building types of lanes and alleys are chosen to be the model for our studying. For this reason, this thesis attempts to analyze the environmental modality of the old-fashioned lanes and alleys of Wuhan, and aims at fully excavating the intension of them in a special perspective. Therefore, the text establishes the system of theory of the environmental form tentatively, and tries to use it in practice. At the end of the thesis, the author probes into the possibility that the theory could be combined with the practice, according to the actual project once presided over.
