Since the opening of Shanghai in1843, the collision of Chinese andWestern cultures has made traditional Chinese architectural type gradually evolveinto new architectural forms under the influence of Western culture-ShikumenLanes and Alleys are special products in this background, which has become animportant representative of modern residential building in Shanghai. Their culturalidentity of combing Chinese and Western elements has highlighted the history ofurban development in Shanghai, carrying strong social characteristics and lifestyleof the residents. Today, Shikumen Lanes and Alleys which have occupied thecentral area of the city has been unable to meet the requirements of modern livingenvironment. Due to great amount of needs in manpower and material resourcesto maintain for the protection and repair, they have hindered the pace of progressof the city, and removal has become the fate of most Shikumen Lanes and Alleys.The one side is the menacing demands of urban development, while the otherside is a continuation of historic features in the city. In the face of thesecontradictions, the development of Shikumen Lanes and Alleys has been in adilemma. Under the context of market economy, how to deal with the protection ofShikumen Lanes and Alleys to make it continue through update and how tobalance the contradiction between the public interest orientation and protection ofurban context have become an urgent problem of urban development in Shanghai. This paper takes Shanghai Shikumen Lanes and Alleys developed from thelate19th century to the1930s as the research objective. Through theaccumulation of literature and practical investigation, this paper has sorted out theformation and development of Shanghai Shikumen Lanes and Alleys. Throughcombining with the investigation and study data, this paper has summarized theircultural characteristics which have shown under special historical background,and discussed the value formed in the process of urbanization in Shanghai andimpact on the future urban development of Shanghai; Through the status analysisof Shanghai Shikumen Lanes and Alleys, and the reflection of the transformationin the past, the paper has pointed out the predicaments of Shikumen Lanes andAlleys in the development; finally, in terms of the predicaments Shikumen Lanesand Alleys have been faced with, and the four existing and representativeprotection and update modes-Xin Tian Di Mode, Tian Zi Fang Mode, Jian Ye LiMode, Bu Gao Li Mode, it has made an analysis and obtain inspiration, proposingdevelopment goals of Shikumen, exploring the development countermeasures ofShanghai Shikumen Lanes and Alleys and hoping to provide useful ideas for thefuture development of Shikumen Lanes and Alleys.
