This dissertation takes the lanes and alleys of Han Zheng Jie area as the research subject. By some effective ways, such as literature reading, filed investigation and so on, the paper has fulfilled the comprehensive study not only on the material space but on the spatial cognition of Han Zheng Jie. The research proceeded promptly according to the unceasing investigation in Han Zheng Jie area. Generally speaking, the study could be divided into two parts. The first part began with the overall inspection to the space of the lanes and alleys. It discovered the natural texture of the lanes after doorplates analyzing and fully highlighted the importance of the lanes and alleys space to the inhabitants. The second part was rather complicated and important, regarding the cognition in the lanes and alleys of Han Zheng Jie area. As a result, it explored the two major cognitive systems here, with a case study on the representative region, namely, the spontaneous settlements area. One was doorplate which was common but dominant. The other was a special system based on the daily life of human being. In addition, the paper excavated the close connection between the two cognitive systems from a long run. Through these two aspects mentioned above, this paper annotates the inherent characteristics of Han Zheng Jie area, and unfolds clearly that it is positive, diverse and vigorous. And the paper emphasizes the significance of daily life, which is the original spirit inside the space of chaotic lanes and alleys. Then, the article scientifically narrates the two cognitive systems in details. At a large extent, they would make the cognition here more effective and efficient. Furthermore, the study is helpful to realize that the civilian is the real master of urban design, not the designer or the developer. In consequence, the paper advances some corresponding proposals for the transformation of Han Zheng Jie, for instance, to advocate retaining the typical lanes and alleys. However, the research is just a preliminary attempt and there must be some defects on account of the complexity and long duration of transformation. And I wish the paper would be profitable for further research in Han Zheng Jie and the research could provide instructive advices for the whole urban space.
