Modern power system is characterized by large scale power grid with area power systems to be interconnected, and more and more high capacity generators putting into operation. Consequently, the stability problem is of much more concern than ever before. A real time distributed monitoring system synchronized by Global Position System (GPS) timing with high accuracy should be the desired solution for such problem. The GPS based synchronous monitoring system samples the voltage and current variables at the main buses and the major generators' terminals simultaneously in a distributed way. Then the operation parameters such as voltage magnitude and phase angle at the main buses, active and reactive power through the main station and plants, rotor angles of the major generators, etc, are computed and sent to the monitoring center in real time. This thesis devoted to developing a software system, as a part of the monitoring system, with high performance for the collection and management of the real-time data at the center. The Linux OS is selected as the platform for the software design. Special considerations are paid to the real-time performance and the stability of the program, which is of vital significance for the realization of entire monitoring system. The principle and application of Linux OS is extensively studied at first. It is demonstrated that program developed based on Linux OS should be the desired one meeting the high performance requirements by the real time monitoring system. The whole software framework is then put forward based on demand analysis and module function design method. Details of the managing mechanism of communication between Linux OS and its peripheral devices, as well as the process scheduler mechanism and security mechanism of Linux OS are analyzed in a deep way. Some countermeasures are raised to strengthen the security of software system and guarantee the program stability and the real-time performance of the software system from data accessing, processing to storing. Finally, the designed software system is introduced to the application of the real-time monitoring system of Hunan power grid. The concerning details of the practical implementation, such as the structure and design of the software system of real-time monitoring system of Hunan power system, the measures to achieve the stability, real-time performance and so on, are discussed. The summary of the main contents are presented at the end of the thesis and further work is suggested.
