With the expanding of electric power system, more and more high capacity generators are put into operation. Frequently changing of operating mode make remarkable problem of the stability in power system than ever before. Establishing the electric Real-time monitoring system is necessary. Since the Linux OS has merits such as source code openness, custom-made, stability and etc, the monitoring software based on Linux OS are widely applied on the electric power system. A good man-machine interactive contact interface is very important to the operator to judge the electric-network running status and detail with the suddenly occurred accident. In such a situation, complexity of cartography realization under the Linux system, which causes the unfriendly interface, limits the Linux system further application.X Window/Motif graphic interface system make up the shortage of Linux. X Window system is purposed to establish a standard of graph and letter demonstration window system that has independency with the specific hardware system. The Motif is the higher-level tool pack based on the Xlib library. The UIM/X is a second generation Graphical User Interface (GUI) builder. It enables software developers to interactively create, modify, test and generate code for the user interface of their applications. Developers use a WYSIWYG editor to choose graphically from any of the OSF/Motif Widgets and draw interfaces.The most remarkable superiority of the Proc file system in data collecting module is that it manages memory as files. That is to say, the Proc file data is existed completely in memory, so that it simultaneously has merit both of memory and file. According to above, we can manage data as the way as we manage memory.The current situation in application and research of Linux OS are demonstrated and the meaning of electric monitoring software based on Linux OS is given at first. Then, the fundamental theory of power system monitoring is discussed, and the scaled designation of the power system monitoring hardware and software system is developed, which is based on Linux OS. Next, the operation principle of graphical program base on Xwindow system, new development of X window Graphic programming technique– UIM/X integrated development environment and the operation matter of Proc file system are analyzed. Design and application of Man-machine interactive contact module based on UIM/X integrated development environment and data collecting module based on of Proc file system are also presented.The summary of the main contents is presented and further work is still needed is pointed out at the end of the thesis.
