The development of the Internet technology has being provided favourable conditions for enterprises to improve their capabilities of innovation and market competation. Resource sharing and technology service based on web are bi-beneficial scheme for both enterprises and service providers. Based on the considerations mentioned above, this paper researched the development of mechanical elements drawing database on web in order to provide services for manufacturing enterprises on Internet. By combining theoretical research with software development, the author studied the relative problems described as follows.1) The whole framework of mechanical elements drawing database on web was studied. The design of users' rights management and methods of database maintenance were researched.2) The hiberarchy of mechanical elements was given and the database was designed based on the hiberarchy. The connection pool of Tomcat, which serves as the web server, was configured and the Class Encapsulation of the database operation was given by using JavaBean. In this way the foundation was established for the server to treate the relationships between the requests from the client and the database operations from the server side.3) The communication between Applet on the client and Servlet on the Server was researched and two classes, named as HttpConnAppl and HttpConnServ, wereconstructed by using Object-Oriented technology. The communication tunnel was built and the information communication between Applet and Servlet was realized. As a result, the method of operating the database on the server could be determined based on the requests from the client.4) ActiveX Automation was used to implement the calling up of Solid Edge by VB software. Variable driving technology of Solid Edge was researched so that the required 3D drawing could be generated on drawing server when the parameters of the element were input on client.5) The communication between Java Servlet and VB was researched and the treatment method of queuing the user's requests was discussed. Based on the VB program written on server, 3D drawing of the required element could be generated on line.Integrating all of the researches mentioned above, a long-distance system for drawings generation of mechanical elements was established. When the user login the system, he can search the mechanical elements, input parameters on the interface provided by the system and get the 3D drawing of required element. The method and the system introduced in this paper provide a powerful tool for user to generate the required 3D drawing of elements. When the system was embeded into ASP service platform, it would play more important part.
