Lightweight steel residence is one kind of steel structural residences, which has been adopted widely in outside world as a kind of architecture form and just has been developed lately in our country these years. Depending on the whole series of technique and building material product line of Occident countries, most of domestic corporations product and assemble the residences at home. It is significant to do theoretic and experimental researches on the load bearing performance of this kind of structure. The reasons are as follows. As a main direction of the residence industrialization for our country, it has many merits. On the other hand, the emendation of design code is urgent. The work presented in this paper focuses on three aspects:1. First, the relations between column's height, web's width, wall's thickness and critical load were researched when the cold-formed thin-wall steel column of C-section was subjected to vertical axial load. Under this circumstance, failure models of the columns were analyzed.2. Second, the finite element numerical calculation on its failure model and critical load was done when the wall-columns system was subjected to vertical load. Comparisons on calculation results of section effective width, effective area and allowable axial load were done, which referred to 《Technical code of cold-formed thin-wall steel structures》 (GB-50018) and American 《Specification for the design of cold-formed steel structural members》 , when components were subjected to vertical loads.3. Last, vertical bearing capacity of the single C-section column and the wall-columns system was analyzed by experiment based on theoretic analysis and finite element numerical calculation. Comparisons between above two structures were done for critical load and failure model. Function of the board in the wall-columns system was further studied and a reasonable suggestion was given for the column's design in practical residence.
