In the literature, advanced techniques and its development on monitoring system of water industry has been discussed. On the basis of them, research on automatic system of water reservoir has been performed. The comprehensive automatic system consists of gate control system of water reservoir, electric automatic system, water information automatic monitoring and forecast system, monitoring system of dam safety, monitoring system video frequency, etc. In the research, the typical structure, characteristics and functions of the system and the communication mode of the system have been studied. Combining the engineering of Tangcun water reservoir in Shandong Province, the monitoring system of sluice gate, outlet conduit hydropower station and management bureau have been discussed. The constitution of hardware and software of dam safety monitoring system and implementation of its function also have been studied. In the article, the characteristics of automatic monitoring system of Tangcun reservoir has been paid emphasis on. Meanwhile, it shouid be pointed out that a perfect comprehensive automatic system must have reasonable structure, advanced equipment, normative construction and dependable operation. Only the system can be operated dependable, the safety of water reservoir can be guaranteed. Aiming at the problems occurred in the comprehensive automatic system of Tangcun water reservoir, common factors impacting on the system reliability in the comprehensive automatic system have been analyzed, the system reliability techniques have been studied, and the measures to improve the system reliability have been presented.
