In dredging Engineering, The underwater soil, cut and mixed with water, is usually sucked and transported to disposal area by a centrifugal slurry pumps. The slurry pump is one of the key facilities of a dredger. When water flow contains sands, forming a two-phase flow, the Characteristics of the slurry pump differ from those when transporting clear water. The pump lift and efficiency will obviously drop. Due to the complexity, It is necessary to study further the performance of a slurry pump transporting sand.In this paper, an experimental method is applied to study the effects of sand on the performance of a slurry pump. The study is helpful to engineers to understand accurately the properties of the facility, to make the dredger work effectively .The results can be used as a reference in the optimal design of a slurry pump.
