This paper researches two types of soft-switching inverters――Quasi-Resonant DC Link(QRDCL) inverter and Zero-Current-Transition (ZCT) inverter. The paper discusses the operation principles and characters of the two class types of soft-switching inverters by detail analysis and simulation. Inverting switches of QRDCL inverter can operate at zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) conditions from noload to full load conditions with any Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) strategy. The switches of ZCT inverter can be turned on and turned off under zero-current conditions with any PWM strategy. Thus ZCT inverter is suitable for large current load applications. The paper also studies the operation principles and characters of single-phase unipolar double-frequency Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) inverter. The paper designs a 900W single-phase unipolar double-frequency SPWM full-bridge ZCT inverter proto-type in detail. The experimental results of the proto-type verify the principle. The comparison between proto-type performance under ZCT conditions and that under hard-switching conditions proves that the ZCT technique can decrease switching losses and improve the efficiency and power density at high frequency switching. Therefore, ZCT inverter is very suitable for large current load with high frequency switching applications.
