With the development of economy and loads, the programming and operation of distribution power system are facing new problems. Reactive power programming is an important way to improve the voltages of distribution power system and reduce the energy loss. Capacitor compensation is a main method of compensation in distribution power system. This paper emphasizes at the optimal placing of capacitors in distribution power system to achieve the best economic behavior and eligible voltage.Considering the fluctuation of loads, the paper analyses the format and parameters of active and reactive load curves. Then a load model is set up and the curves are described with a load coefficient matrix. To measure the economic behavior of the investment, energy loss calculation is studied. Power-flow is calculated with the back-forward sweeping algorithm according to the characteristics of distribution power system. Then the energy loss can be got using the power loss at the maximum load moment. The paper analyses the benefit to the distribution power system by compensation, and points out the characteristics of compensation position and quantity in distribution power system. On the basis of these characteristics, the load curves are described with normal school. The capacitors are grouped and their economic behaviors are measured separately according to the fix position, compensation degree and running hours, using a concept called equivalent maximum loss hours. During the programming, a best compensation node set is used to commit a step-by-step compensation. When a best economic behavior is achieved, result is adjusted by voltage restriction.Simulation case shows that the programming algorithm works well in getting the result, measuring the economic behavior, calculation efficiency and stability.
